This has been a difficult year for Angelenos.

This has been a very difficult year for Angelenos who have lost income.

This is still a difficult and challenging year for Angelenos living with food insecurity.

According to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, as many as one in five Angelenos, or about two million people, are food insecure —a problem that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life because of a lack of money, and other resources.

FOOD SECURITY AND HUNGER. Los Angeles County is home to the largest population of food-insecure people in the nation. Nearly 30 percent of low-income individuals in Los Angeles County struggle with food insecurity, not knowing where their next meal will come from.

Los Angeles County is home to one of the largest populations of any county in the nation. We are also home to one of the largest accounts of hunger. Before the pandemic, an estimated 1 in 5 people in Los Angeles County lived with food insecurity, but after the COVID-19 outbreak, the number of people needing food assistance has increased markedly. It is estimated that 1 in 4 of our neighbors faces food insecurity.

Los Angeles Has a Problem. Food security, as defined by the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, refers to the condition in which individuals, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life (“Food Security”).
